Simple Present Tense in English – Rules, Examples, and Exercises

1) When Do We Use Simple Present?

  • Habits / routines: I wake up at 6 o’clock.
  • Facts / general truths: The Earth moves around the Sun.
  • Feelings / states: She likes chocolate.
  • Instructions / directions: Open your books.

2) Sentence Structure

Affirmative:
Subject + Verb (base form) + Object
Example: They play football.

Negative:
Subject + do/does + not + Verb (base form) + Object
Example: He does not (doesn’t) eat rice.

Question:
Do/Does + Subject + Verb (base form) + Object?
Example: Do you like tea?

3) Rules to Remember

  • Use does with he, she, it.
  • Add -s / -es to the verb with he, she, it in affirmative sentences.
    Examples: She plays cricket. / He goes to school.
  • Do not add “-s” in questions/negatives with does.
    Correct: He doesn’t play football. (not plays)

4) Common Mistakes

Wrong: She go to school every day.
Correct: She goes to school every day.

Wrong: Do he plays cricket?
Correct: Does he play cricket?
