Present Continuous Tense – Rules, Examples, and Exercises

The Present Continuous Tense (also called Present Progressive) is used to talk about actions happening right now or temporary actions. In this lesson, we will learn the rules, examples, common mistakes, and practice exercises for the Present Continuous Tense.

1) When Do We Use Present Continuous?

  • Actions happening at the moment: She is reading a book.
  • Temporary actions: I am living in Delhi for a few months.
  • Planned future arrangements: We are going to the park tomorrow.
  • Actions in progress: The children are playing outside.

2) Sentence Structure

Affirmative:
Subject + am/is/are + Verb+ing + Object
Example: I am writing a letter.

Negative:
Subject + am/is/are + not + Verb+ing + Object
Example: They are not watching TV.

Question:
Am/Is/Are + Subject + Verb+ing + Object?
Example: Are you studying English?

3) Rules to Remember

  • Use am with I.
  • Use is with he, she, it and singular nouns.
  • Use are with you, we, they and plural nouns.
  • Add -ing to the main verb: go → going, eat → eating, run → running.

4) Common Mistakes

Wrong: She is read a book.
Correct: She is reading a book.

Wrong: They are goes to school.
Correct: They are going to school.
